How to Care for Costume Jewelry

Trends are so fleeting these days, and it seems we’re constantly in the midst of updating our wardrobes just to keep up with the changes each season. We never hesitate to invest in solid and timeless pieces, but we usually opt for the cheaper retailers when purchasing each season’s ‘must-haves’ that might not be around for too long. Remember galaxy pants? These days, we also find ourselves buying a lot of costume jewelry from stores like Forever 21 and H&M; it’s not always the best quality, but it keeps us trending with very little stress on our wallets.

We love that we can we can grab 10 trendy necklaces for under $50 at Forever 21, but we don’t love how quickly they can become discoloured and tarnished. We hated the thought of abandoning our bargain buys, so we went on the hunt for ways to keep them looking spiffy and like new. After a solid hour of online detective work, we discovered something wonderful – Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss.

This stuff is great. It’s typically under $10.00, lasts forever, and works wonders for preserving our cheap baubles. Our gold plated rings no longer turn silver and our silver plated necklaces no longer turn black. Praise Krylon!

We’ve used it on metallic, plastic, and even wooden pieces, and it’s worked well each time. It’s so simple; just lay your jewelry flat on a piece of cardboard or wax paper, open a window, and spray away! If the jewelry has any jewels just cover them with a piece of tape beforehand. Once the Krylon has dried completely simply remove the tape and cover those bits with a quick swipe of clear nail polish. To further help preserve the finish, store your jewelry in plastic Ziploc bags.
