Are you a makeup novice looking to learn the fundamentals of makeup artistry? Then look no further! QC Makeup Academy is here to help you learn how to apply makeup for any occasion.
Our courses really teach you from the ground up. We provide in depth training on the makeup environment, how to use each and every makeup brush properly and effectively, and how to maintain a sanitary practice. For example, if you’re merely looking to further your makeup knowledge for personal use there’s no need to worry about double dipping into blush or lipstick pots. However, if your goal is to work to work as a professional in the makeup field, there are some very specific sanitation guidelines you must follow.
You’ll also learn everything you need to know about facial shapes and skin tones, correctors and concealers, and how to cover up any type of imperfection you might encounter. Through hours of instructional video you’ll be taught how to apply concealing makeup on clients with acne, aging skin, and tattoos. In addition, you’ll learn the ins and outs of bridal makeup, and how to apply makeup for film and television.
Throughout both our makeup courses there is a strong emphasis on teaching students how to apply makeup to a wide variety of clientele while always maintaining a professional tone. It may not be the first thing you think of, but applying the appropriate amount of brush pressure can sometimes be the one thing that makes a client come back to you a second, third, and fourth time.
Lastly, our panel of professional tutors and outstanding student support specialists really help to seal the deal for most of our students. Each time you submit work, your tutor will take the time to look at your assignments individually. They will provide you with letter grades and audio feedback, to let you know exactly what you did well, and what might need a little improvement. If you ever have questions along the way, our well-trained and friendly Student Support Specialists are always happy and available to help.

It’s the best of student work! Meet Cristina Iliescu, Joshua Gilchrist, and Lynn Phu. We’re introducing you to these three standout QC students and grads today, because we’re so proud of the work they’ve accomplished! We want to give a big thanks to all three of our featured MUAs for sharing with us their inside perspectives on the makeup industry…and of course, some gorgeous photos of their work.
QC: What’s your favorite part about being a makeup artist, or makeup artist in training?
Cristina: My favorite part is that I can express my creativity and I can bring confidence, self-esteem, and a smile to my clients.
Joshua: I love working with people. The fact that makeup artistry is a very artistic field allows me to be creative!
Lynn: My favorite part is showing off my creative side because I love art and I love my clients’ happy reactions when I finish their makeup looks.
QC: What’s your dream job?
Cristina: Being a makeup artist is my dream job. It is the only job that makes me feel me.
Joshua: To be a world renowned makeup artist who everyone would love to work with.
Lynn: My dream job would be to do fantasy makeup for runway shows.
QC: If you could do anyone’s makeup, who would you love to work with?
Cristina: I would love to work with celebrities like Angelina Jolie or Kate Moss because they have that natural beauty that makes a makeup artist’s work a pleasure, but I know that I would feel totally fulfilled as a makeup artist if I could bring back the lost beauty of those people who have had a tough life.
Joshua: I would love to do makeup for Adele.
Lynn: Emma Stone, because she seems very laid back and easy going. I also think any makeup would work for her.
QC: Why did you choose to study with QC Makeup Academy?
Cristina: I wanted to study more about this passion of mine (as you all know, in makeup learning never ends!), so I was looking for something professional enough to feed my hunger for information but also allow me to continue my job. After almost two months of searching for the best school for me, I discovered QC Makeup Academy. After doing some research, I decided that it was exactly what I was looking for, so I enrolled immediately. I am so happy I did, and I am so honored to be part of this fascinating family.
Joshua: I was very happy with the great source of information. The Student Support Specialists are amazing and the assignments were a great way to evolve me into a wonderful artist.
Lynn: I chose QC Makeup Academy because the step-by-step guide was well planned and I wanted to learn something new.

Any artist who has used primer already knows the drastic difference it makes in the application and longevity of foundation. Since this hidden gem works such wonders on the skin, I found it only fitting to do some investigation into whether other spot-specific primers might garner just as favorable results. Low and behold, I found some amazing products that really can maximize the eyes, lips and lashes. Here are my recommendations for some alternative primers that will definitely make the most of the whole face…but don’t be afraid to experiment and find a favorite of your own.
Disappearing and creasing shadows seem to be a major complaint for most women and makeup artists. A well-formulated primer will lock shadow in place for the entire day. Urban Decay Primer Potion is my go to. This powerhouse makes three promises: 1. Eye shadow that lasts. 2. More vibrant color 3. No creasing. And miracle of miracles, it delivers on all three.
If the smokey eye is a look for you, try Pixi Smoky Eye Primer. The base is dark gray, so when you lay the darker shadows over it, they will blend well and disappear seamlessly into the shaded primer. When lightly laid on the lid, it actually does half of the work for you. It can also be used on its own as a sultry cream shadow.
Concealer loves two things, to look obvious and to crease. The Sue Devitt Microquatic Prime Target Intensive Eye Treatment Primer will prevent both of those unsightly under-eye catastrophes. This multipurpose product is a clear gel that hydrates, reduces puffiness and most importantly, gives concealer something to flawlessly bond to.
If you intend to eat, drink, or even lick your lips, you might as well not even wear lipstick without a primer. The Senna Totally Transforming Lip Primer is perfect for keeping the color on. In addition, it uses peptides to plump and promote health and silicone to fill lines. I sure do love a product that improves the skin while making make up look better!
As a makeup lover and artist, I am always on the hunt for products that will improve wear-ability and make application smoother and more flawless. These products certainly fit the bill.

Are you wondering how to become a freelance makeup artist? The best way is to take a course in makeup artistry, like the ones offered by QC Makeup Academy. Depending where you live, cosmetology school might be a requirement for you to work in the industry. Unfortunately, cosmetology school is very expensive, takes a long time to complete, and does not offer the in-depth makeup training you need to specialize in makeup. That’s why whether or not you’re taking cosmetology classes, taking a course from QC Makeup Academy is a great career choice.
Depending on your interests, there are two courses for you to choose from: Makeup Artistry, and Master Makeup Artistry – a more advanced course that goes into topics such a glamor and fantasy, makeup for film and television, and makeup for the runway and photography. If you need some help deciding which course is right for you, give the school a call and talk to a Student Support Specialist. They know the courses inside and out, and they can assist you in this important career decision.
Many students don’t have the advantage of living in a city with a makeup school. That doesn’t mean they’re out of luck when it comes to receiving top quality makeup training. QC Makeup Academy’s courses are done entirely through distance education – that means no matter where you live, you can learn how to become a professional makeup artist! QC is an international school, and has students studying makeup from all over the world, and graduates using their skills to advance their makeup careers.

Building a career as a makeup artist is different than getting started in a lot of other industries. For one thing, most of the jobs you get will not be advertised online. When trying to get freelance makeup artist jobs, you need to get your clients to come to you. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Buy the right tools – It is a bit of an investment to build a professional makeup kit, but it will be well worth the money when you’re going into a job well prepared and with the tools you need to create beautiful makeup looks. That means collecting a range of colors in eye shadows, lipsticks, blushes, and foundations that will suit a variety of different skin types and different events. It’s also very important to come to a job with professional brushes and a good brush cleaner. This will ensure that you show up to any job like a professional.
Build a portfolio – In your free time, practice your artistry on friends or family members, take good quality photos of your work (keep in mind the lighting!), and upload them online. It’s a good idea to get a professional Facebook page for your freelance business, especially if you don’t yet have a website, for your portfolio pictures. When you get business cards, be sure to include your Facebook fan page link so potential clients can easily see your work.
Create a network – Reach out to models and photographers who are looking for a makeup artist to help with a shoot. You might not get paid for your work, but you will make valuable industry contacts and will probably get to keep the photos for your portfolio. The more people who know you’re working in the industry, the more likely you are to be contacted when one of them is looking for a makeup artist. It’s all about who you know.

Kat Von D has perfected the modern pinup look – she’s never seen without her trademark red lipstick and dark cat-eyes. The following steps will help you achieve the perfect Kat Von D pinup look.
1. Foundation and concealer – The pinup look is all about a flawless-looking face. Start with a primer, and then apply a matte foundation. Conceal any flaws or areas of discoloration with a concealer, then use a setting powder to finish it off.
2. Bronzer – Add some dimension and contouring to the face by running bronzer along the cheekbones, and down the sides of the nose.
3. Eye shadow – For this look, you’ll be blending brown and black shades. For your base, cover the entire lid in a whitish tone, like MAC’s “Brule”. Don’t be afraid to use a lot – it will help you blend later on. Next, go in with a soft brown along the outer corners of the brow bone and blend everything together to soften the edges. Then, using an eye shading brush, pull the dark brown underneath the eye.
Add some black shadow to the outer corner and underneath the eye to go even darker and give more definition. Blend well, and pull the black shadow across the bottom lash line.
4. Liner and mascara – Line the bottom waterline with a black pencil. Next, swipe black liner across the top lash line with a fine brush. Blend everything together with a flat brush and some more black shadow. Then add mascara.
5. Brows – Using a brow brush, darken the eyebrows and fill in any gaps, creating the classic pinup shape. The brows are an integral part of this look, should be very structured and strong.
6. Lips – Line the lips in red. Don’t be afraid to over the lip line a little bit to create some extra pout. Then, color in the lips with your favorite red lipstick.
Voila! A gorgeous pinup look, a la Kat Von D.
